Author Q&A

Oddbird is a delightful, colorful picture book all about celebrating your true self. What inspired you to write this story as your editorial debut?

The idea came to me when I was still in art school. A bird unlike all the rest. A bird like me! Growing up, I wasn’t the kind of boy that was into sports or cars. Instead, I loved to draw and dance! Very odd at the time. That sense of being different always stayed with me and when the idea of Oddbid came to me, I knew exactly how the story would go.

Do you have a favorite scene or spread from the book and why?

I would say it’s the moment when Oddbid jumps off the diving board into the pool. To feel free from his “feathers” and to finally swim in the fresh, cool water. Sometimes I think this might resonate with adults as well as children because as adults, we’re the ones who yearn to feel liberated while children inherently feel free… until they don’t.

What message do you hope young readers take away from Oddbird?

Celebrate yourself as you are. There is nothing you need to add on to yourself to be special or be of value. You are perfect as you are.
