The Wampanoag people honor guardian spirits as well as loved ones who have left this world. Before special meals they make a plate of food for the spirits to eat and place it outside.

Try making a Spirit Plate at your next gathering in gratitude for plants, animals, and ancestors. Take a pinch of each food served at the meal and put the plate in a special place outside.
